2007 – 2017: 10 Years Since the Sukhoi Superjet 100 Roll-Out

10 years ago, on the 26th of September, 2007 the first Sukhoi Superjet 100 prototype was rolled out in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, the first public appearance of the first flying SSJ100 prototype happened.


In eight months after this event, in May 2008, the first flight was successfully accomplished.


In Spring 2011 the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company, the producer of theSSJ100 started the deliveries of the aircraft.

By September 2017 there are105SSJ100 under operation. Since the beginning of the commercial operation they performed more than 220 000 commercial flightsthat lasted more than 330 000 flight hours.

According to the United Aircraft Corporation estimations general demand for the 100-seat aircraft segment during 2017-2036 might surpass 2300 aircraft. During the upcoming 5 years it is planned to deliver about170-180 aircraft including business versions, with the target delivery of 35-40 aircraft per year.


Currently Sukhoi Superjet 100 is operated by Russian Aeroflot, Gazpromavia,Yakutia Airlines, Yamal, IrAero, RusJet, Azimuth, Russian Government structures: Ministry of Internal Affairs, Special Flight Division Rossiya, EMERCOM are operating now the aircraft in various modifications. Mexican Interjet, Irish CityJet, Royal Thai Air Force are also among the operators.

New modern platform was created during the Sukhoi Superjet 100 design process. It comprises not only the framework itself with certain characteristics, but the equipment that can also be used for other aircraft type development. Manufacturing collaboration was created from scratch, technical re-equipping was fulfilled and new workplaces were created at the modern production, new technologies are put in practice and innovative solutions are being implemented.


SSJ100 is the product that unites the aircraft itself, the sales finance system, the crew training system and the after-sales support system. Russian aviation industry acquired completely new competences in aircraft design ab initio, certification including validation process, sales at the highly competitive market and the after-sales support system creation.


SukhoiSuperjet 100 became the first one in many respects.

It was the first Russian aircraft that had the demands for the product conceived by the leading airlines of the world asthe starting point for its creation.


So the SSJ100 has a number of advantages for the airlines as well as for the passengers.


For the airlines that is the leveling of the routes up to the demand at which it would be appropriate to put more spacious narrowbody aircraft; the substitution or narrowbody aircraftsif necessary during seasonal decline of passenger traffic instead of operating them with the low payload. The aircraft of the segment are able to substitute the narrowbody aircraft for a long period during the “low” season as well as within 24 hours. If there are spacious aircraft in the fleet of the airline, they are interchangeable with the SSJ100 without any harm to the passenger level of comfort. SSJ100 is an active component in the concept of hubs, which allows airlines to optimize their costs, delivering passengers by a smaller aircraft in an airline base airport. And other benefits.


For the passengers the comfort of the SSJ100 cabin is comparable with medium and long-haul aircraft.

The height of passenger compartment in the central aisle is 83.46 inches / 212 cm.

There are comfortable wide seats, comparable to those being usually installed on medium and long-haul aircraft. There is the wide central aisle. There is also significant living space for each passenger: an increased seat pitch in SSJ100 basic configuration (32 inches / 81.28 cm) allows even tall passengers to feel comfortable on-board.


There are large windows for natural light and better outside view.

Spacious 78.74 inches / 2 m length overhead bins without inside partitions allow convenient accommodation of hand luggage. LED lighting system spreads warm light. There are roomy toilets, the one in the rear service area is adapted for people with reduced mobility, in addition, it is equipped with a wide diaper board.The boarding to the SSJ100 can be performed through a mobile stairway and a boarding bridge as well.


It took the aircraft an extremely short period of time to obtain the IAC AR Type Certificate of the Russian Aviation Authority after performing an unprecedentedly broad test program during 3 years starting from the first flight in 2008.


The SSJ100 certification campaign included 200 programs of bench, onground and flight tests including 25 special test programs for the whole scale of the expected operation conditions. The flight test program consisted of 2594 flight hours for 1087 flights. During the test flights SSJ100 took off and landed to more than 20 airports of Russia, CIS and Europe, confirming by practice the opportunity of the successful operation. During the tests SSJ100 confirmed the compliance with the existing and the future demands for the noise level and hazardous emission.

SukhoiSuperjet 100 was created to conquer foreign markets and that it why it became the first Russian passenger aircraft certified in compliance with the aviation rules of the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for the category of the transport aircraft. Nevertheless, first deliveries and most of them were made to Russian market, and now the SSJ100 is being operated successfully in different regions and under various weather conditions.


The technologies that were never used before in Russian civil aircraft production were implemented for the SSJ100, such as jigless assembly, automatic adjusting of the airframe assemblage, automatic riveting and others.


Currently the Komsomolsk-on-Amur branch of the Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company where the final assembly is carried out consists of the Components Distribution Centre, Fuselage Assembly Shop, Final Assembly Shop and the Flight Test Centre.

In the Final Assembly Shop 7 working stations are working simultaneously, at four working stations in the Fuselage Assembly Shop and at two working stations of the Flight Test Centre the on ground checks of the aircraft are performed.

The branch uses all the benefits of the lean-technology. Its implementation is aimed at the production effectiveness boost. The technology is based on modern methods as well as equipment purchase process optimization, labour and time expenses reduction.

The production facilities allow produce up to 50 aircraft per year.

It was for the first time in Russia that for the aircraft tender apart from the business plan and the technical proposal there was also the after-sales support system concept submitted.


Now there are two programs for the spare parts: the Basic Super Care Plan granting the access to the pool, guaranteed terms of delivery and the repair, technical support for the aircraft components. And the SuperCarePlanOption – granting the access to the return and exchange fund of the spare parts, technical support for the auxiliary power system and the landing gear, engineer support. The warehouses of the spare parts are situated in Russia and abroad: in Fort Lauderdale (USA) and in Munich (Germany). Powerjet, the partner company and the manufacturer of the engine opened its warehouse nearby Moscow for SSJ100 operation support. Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company is now considering the opportunity of the spare parts distribution network optimization and the increase of the list of spare parts in order to allow grant round-the-clock support to the customers from all over the world.


SCAC is keeping the contact with the airlines. They express their vision and point out the issues that need most attention from the manufacturer. Collaboration improves the efficiency and reliability of the SSJ100. That is why SCAC is currently implementing the program for SSJ100 fleet operability improvement. The program covers full range of operators support activities, it consists of a wide scale of construction, production, information procedures, the biggest part of which has been already fulfilled.

Key advantages of the aircraft are the high level of the operational efficiency and the cabin comfort level comparable to the narrow body aircraft. These two determine the persisting interest to the SSJ100 from Russian and foreign companies.
